What is the AKC Public Education Award?
AKC Public Education seeks to recognize clubs that have made positive contributions to educating the public about AKC dog sports and events, purebred dogs, responsible dog ownership and safety around dogs. By highlighting these efforts, AKC Public Education aims to support the club's ongoing outreach and inspire others to join in on similar educational initiatives.
What are the criteria to apply?
To apply for the award, a club must submit an essay of 500 words or fewer that addresses the following question: How has your club positively contributed to the education of the public on AKC dog sports and events, purebred dogs, responsible dog ownership, and safety around dogs? Applicants must also include a list of public education outreach activities conducted over the past year, along with any available photographs of these events.

Summit County Fair
Located on the Summit County Fairgrounds, ABTCA’s most intensive outreach occurs during Summit County Fair week. In 2024, we hosted 18 demonstrations in our building attended by approximately 1,000 visitors. These crowd-pleasing demos included an RDO coloring contest, 4-H obedience and agility demonstrations and “Agility for All,”which showcased teams of various abilities, showing that teams of all shapes and sizes can participate in dog sports.

Bailey's Book Club
From June to October 2024, ABTCA members donated more than 170 dog-themed books, RDO coloring books, and crayons to three local Title I schools.

Paw Fest
On September 16, 2024, seven ABTCA volunteers provided a tricks demonstration, handed out RDO flyers, and answered questions during an annual community event sponsored by Stow-Monroe Falls Lions Club.

Photos with Santa
On November 10, 2024, ABTCA hosted a benefit for the People Care Pet Pantry. Open to the community, the club was decked out as a winter wonderland. RDO brochures were distributed. The event raised $1,200 and 500 pounds of dog food.

Transforming Tails Scholarship
In fall 2024, ABTCA launched a scholarship program for reactive dogs in foster care, offering 12 weeks of training quarterly. To date, two dogs have completed the training and have been placed in forever homes.

Canine Good Citizen Class
